Coaching Tips

E-Coaching for Everyday Excellence - February 2012: Trust is...

“Trust is knowing that when a team member does push you, they're doing it because they care about the team.”
― Patrick Lencioni, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

Don't take it so personally when someone is pushing you.

To Ponder: Sometimes we need others to challenge us. Sometimes we can't be objective or even aware of something we may need to do, when someone else can clearly see it. What if you could consider it a gift; something you may never have known without this person's help?

Take Action: Next time someone pushes you, or helps you with an awareness, even if it doesn't feel good at the time, consider it a gift. Keep the team in mind and do your best to not take it personally.

Get Your GRIT® Together! - February 2012: Live authentically.

"If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything."
- Mark Twain

Telling the truth to yourself can be even more important, because you begin to live authentically.

To Ponder: What lies do you tell yourself? What little things do you stretch or twist, or simply assume? Do you create stories that aren't the truth? Do you ever imagine, and then believe, you know what someone is feeling or thinking, based on a non-verbal, or your own experience?

Take Action: Be aware of your thoughts, and watch what you tell yourself. Ask yourself - is that really true? Or maybe it's just an assumption? Ask - should I really believe that? Be skeptical even about your own thoughts - in a positive way! Ask yourself questions. This action will lead you to your own truth. The rest comes easy.

DiSC Reminder Series - February 2012: Your Navigator

“The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”
- George Bernard Shaw

Just because you said something, doesn't mean you've effectively communicated it. The key is in the understanding.

To Ponder: How often do people hear something quite different than what was said (or intended)? Words and tone and all those other non-verbals can be misunderstood. Ironically, we are suppose to have the most sophisticated communication of all animals; yet we continuously have the most communication problems!

Take Action: Consider the other person when you are speaking. What words and non-verbals will be best to communicate your intent? Use DiSC to navigate through your communication and reach a shared understanding.

Four Agreements Reminder Series - January 2012: Risk Your Life!

"Honor the man or woman that you are. Take the risk to express your dream. Taking action is about living fully and expressing what you are."
- don Miguel Ruiz

Why are we often afraid to just go for it? We have a yearning to do something, but others tell us it's not practical, or perhaps we're telling ourselves something that holds us back. We stay tucked safely in our little corner and never really live the life we could.

To Ponder: If you're not expressing your dream (i.e. living it), ask yourself why not? What's holding you back from being the person you were born to be? Are you over-thinking it? What are you afraid of? It's the one life you have on this earth (that we know of), so why not give it all you were meant to?

Take Action: Commit to taking action on something that inspires you. Listen to yourself, and when you are passionate about something, go for it! Ignore any negative voices in your head, or at your ear. Your "happiness meter" will help you know when what you are doing fits for you, or not. Long and short-term happiness are best to consider, as sometimes there are small things we may not enjoy, but when we put it in perspective, and remember it's part of our bigger dream, we can decide to enjoy it!
